NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team defeated Rider by a score of 1-0 on senior day at Mazzella Field. Prior to the match, the team recognized its five graduating seniors.
Following a scoreless first half in which the Broncs (5-10-1, 1-6 MAAC) held a narrow 5-4 shot advantage over the Gaels (7-10-1, 4-3 MAAC), Iona broke the stalemate with a goal by freshman
Carly Villanova in the 61st minute. Rookie
Gabriella D'Aprile set off a free kick from the left side that bounded in front of the net.
Diane Hare continued it over to Villanova, who finished off the play for her second tally of the year.
With just a few seconds left on the clock, Iona goalkeeper
Suzanne Baldissard made a great save on the ground to hold off Rider and preserve the shutout. Baldissard finished the afternoon with eight saves. Alex Post had two saves for the Broncs. In addition to Villanova,
Kendra Chisolm and
Abby Dixon each recorded one shot on goal in the win.
The Gaels close out the regular season playing their final two games in Western NY. The squad takes on Canisius on Oct. 23 and Niagara on Oct. 25.
