NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team earned a well-played, 1-0 victory over Siena in the team's second MAAC contest of the year. The Gaels (4-8-1, 1-1-0 MAAC) have now won two in a row and three of their last five games and ended an eight game winning streak for the Saints (8-2-0, 2-1 MAAC).
There was no shortage of chances although neither side managed to score in the first half. Iona held a 12-8 shot advantage with each team making five saves over the first 45 minutes.
Continuing to put pressure on Siena after an impressive opening half performance, the Maroon & Gold finally broke onto the scoreboard in the 78th minute to interrupt the scoreless tie. Freshman Gabriella D'Aprile recorded her team-leading third goal of the season at the 77:10 mark. D'Aprile accepted a pass from fellow rookie Julia Zorn and chipped the ball into the left corner of the net, beating Saints goalkeeper Laura Ettinger.
Freshman Carly Villanova led the squad with four shots on goal, with two each from D'Aprile and Kerrie Deignan completing the total. Siena was led by Tabitha Tice's two shots on goal. Senior goalie Suzanne Baldissard stopped eight to get her first win of the year while Ettinger had seven saves.
Iona returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 4) with a 12:00 pm contest against Marist.
