NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team won its seventh straight game with a 3-0 victory over Manhattan in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Mazzella Field. The Gaels are unbeaten in their last nine and remain undefeated in MAAC play at 4-0 (10-1-2 overall).
After back-and-forth action to start the first half, senior
Fernando Liserra put Iona on the board for the first time with his third goal of the season in the 25th minute. Freshman
Mario Di Miceli centered the ball with a chip from the left side and Liserra maneuvered around a Jasper defender to drop it past visiting goalkeeper Chris Todd.
Just under ten minutes later, rookie
Alvaro Torrecilla pushed the lead to 2-0, scoring off a combination pass from Liserra and junior
Mario Rios. Iona's advantage improved to 3-0 with less than eight minutes remaining in the contest. Senior
Vassilios Roussopoulos netted a penalty kick following a call against Manhattan in the box.
Gael netminder
Nils Binstock made six saves in his seventh shutout of the year. The Maroon & Gold led 16-10 in shots with an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. For the Jaspers, Todd had four saves before being relieved by Randall Brobson, who saved one.
