NIAGARA UNIV., NY - In the final game of the regular season, the Iona College women's soccer team won a 3-2 overtime decision over Niagara in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action on the road.
The Purple Eagles notched the only goal of the first half when Chiara Greco dropped a shot just inside the near post after taking a header pass from Laura Kimoto. Niagara took the 1-0 lead into the second half until Iona evened the score in the 61st minute.
Freshman
Gabriella D'Aprile scored on a penalty kick to tie things up at 1-1. Four minutes later,
Kendra Chisolm helped the Gaels to a 2-1 advantage. Chisolm tore down the right side and put a shot on net, which was forced out by Niagara goalkeeper Ashleigh Bowers. The ball deflected off a Purple Eagle defender and went back into the net.
The host squad came back from the 2-1 defecit to knot the score at 2-all in the 74th minute on a goal by Ashley Mandrino to send the game into overtime. In the 96th minute, Chisolm broke past the Niagara defense and netted the game-winner.
Iona will enter the MAAC Championship as the No. 4 seed. The Gaels will take on No. 5 Canisius in the quarterfinal round on Oct. 30 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, FL.
