BALTIMORE, MD - Giving up one goal in each half, the 22nd ranked Iona College Men's Soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision in MAAC action on the road at Loyola. The loss was just the second for the Gaels this season and the first in conference play. Iona had not posted a loss in its last 11 games, going back to Sep. 11. The squad is now 5-1 in the MAAC and 11-2-2 overall.
Loyola took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute on a goal by Danny Ankrah. Ankrah's initial shot was low and blocked by a Gael defender. The rebound bounced back to Ankrah, who settled it and launched another shot into the upper right side of the net.
Iona put pressure on the Greyhounds' defense quickly in the second half, as
Mario Di Miceli took a shot from 12 yards out that Kyle Wittman saved, and
Fernando Liserra had a shot on the near right side blocked. In the 56th minute,
Roberto Hernandez-Raaen directed a header at goal from near the top of the 18, but Wittman again made a save for Loyola.
After a few more scoring opportunities for both teams, the Greyhounds got an insurance goal in the 71st minute. Wade McHugh fed a pass to Jamie Darvill, who chipped the ball over the head of Iona goalkeeper
Nils Binstock. Binstock, who allowed two goals for the first time since a Sep.9 contest at Quinnipiac, registered three saves in the defeat.
The Gaels look to put another win in the books on Sunday when they take on Rider on the road at 12:00 pm.
