LOUDONVILLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team won its fourth straight game with a 2-1 victory in the conference opener at Siena. The Gaels (7-1-2, 1-0 MAAC) have not posted a loss in their last six contests.
Freshman Alvaro Torrecilla scored his second and third goals of the year to give Iona a 2-0 cushion in the first half. Just over three minutes into the game, Torrecilla netted a shot from the right post after taking a pass from senior Giovanni Destasio. He added the insurance tally in the 15th minute.
The Saints (5-5-1, 0-1 MAAC) cut the defecit in half late in the second period, reaching the scoreboard in the 83rd minute. Joe Tavernese inbounded the ball for Siena and Jannis Opalka directed it over to Emery Welshman, who headed it into the net in the 83rd minute to create the 2-1 final.
Destasio and Adam Rohan each contributed an assist and a shot on goal for Iona. Goalkeeper Nils Binstock made seven saves in the win. For Siena, Phil Chabot and Steve Skonieczny split time in front of the net, making one save apiece.
The Gaels return to MAAC action with a 3:30 tilt at Marist on Sunday (Oct. 11).
