LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - The Iona College men's soccer team recorded a 1-0 victory in MAAC action at Rider this afternoon. The No. 22 Gaels are now 12-2-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play after winning nine of their last ten games.
The contest remained scoreless through the first half, with each team attempting five shots over the first 45 minutes. Senior Fernando Liserra scored the game-winning goal in the 70th minute when he found the back of the net on a penalty kick. The tally was the fourth of the year for Liserra, matching his career-high set a season ago. Goalkeeper Nils Binstock made five saves in his career-best ninth shutout of the season.
Iona currently leads the MAAC standings heading into the final week of the regular season and has clinched a playoff berth in a non-Disney year for the first time in 11 years. The squad will play a two-game homestand to wrap things up, beginning with a 2:00 pm match-up against Canisius on Nov. 6.
