NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's swimming and diving team picked up its second win in as many days as the Gaels defeated Canisius by the score 129-105 Saturday afternoon at Hynes Center Pool.
In the 400 yard medley relay, the Gaels were set an early setback as the Golden Griffins picked up first and third in the event. The Iona team of
Michael Wu,
Matthew Magura,
Patrick O'Reilly and
Joseph De Leone took second with a time of 3:45.92. The team of
Marty Callinan,
Chris Durette,
Jay Wegimont and
Michael O'Connor took fourth with a time of 4:11.56.
The Gaels came back in the 1000 yd freestyle as the Gaels took two of the top three spots in the race.
Chris Yacobacci won the event with a time of 10:14.34, while Zachary Benoit came in third with aitme of 10:18.46.
Raymond Joyal took fifth in the event with a time of 10:29.31.
Senior
David Gartman took the team's second consecutive event victory when he won the 200 yd freestyle with a time of 1:46.74. De Leone was third with a time of 1:48.50 and Durette was fifth in 1:57.40.
Ed Gronkowski matched his classmate when he won the 50 yd freestyle for the Gaels. His time of 22.70 was just enough to Canisius' Mike Disco's 22.89.
Graham Weir was third with a time of 22.99, while Callinan finished sixth in the event with a time of 24.16.
Yacobacci continued his strong day when he won the 200 yd IM with a time of 2:01.93. Fellow freshman William Kolodgie was just behind him in second with a time of 2:05.56. Matt Magura finished fourth with a time of 2:05.93.
Wu took second in the 200 yd butterfly with a time of 2:06.96. O'Reilly (2:07.67) and Wegimont (2:16.48) followed behind in third and fourth.
Gartman made it two wins on the day when he just beat Gronkowski in the 100 yd freestyle. Gartman touched at 48:57, while Gronkowski was right behind with a time of 49.41. Weir's 50.29 was good enough for fourth in the event.
In the closet event of the meet, De Leone edged out Canisius' Matthew Moessinger in the 500 yd freestyle by just .65 seconds. Benoit was third with a time of 5:03.37, while Joyal's 5:04.97 resulted in a fourth place finish for the Gaels.
Callinan took third in the 200 yd backstroke with a time of 2:14.10. O'Reilly (2:18.19) and Wu (2:18.58) were just behind in fourth and fifth.
Yacobacci made it three on the day when he won the 200 yd breaststroke in a time of 2:10.95. Magura took third with a time of 2:15.65.
In the 400 yd freestyle relay, the Iona team of Gronkowski, Kolodgie, Weir and Gartman took first with a time of 3:14.88. The time of Wegimont, O'Connor, Durette and Joyal took third with a time of 3:32.83.
In diving, senior
Daniel Pflager took third in the one-meter with 128.55 points.
The Gaels next host St. Francis (NY) on Dec. 2 at 5:00 pm.
