NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 1-0 win over Niagara on senior day at Mazzella Field. The victory marked the 11th time this season that the Gaels have held their opponent scoreless.
The game-winning goal came in the 77th minute on an unassisted shot by senior
Vassilios Roussopoulos. Niagara goalkeeper John Fiutowski made a save for the Purple Eagles, but was pulled out of his position to do so. Roussopoulos settled the ball when it bounced out of the goalie's arms and, with Fiutowski out of the goal, kicked a soft shot into the empty net. The goal was the second of the season for Roussopoulos.
The Maroon & Gold held a commanding 19-10 lead in shots including a 12-6 margin in the second half. Roussopoulos led Iona with five shots on goal, followed by two by freshman
Mario Di Miceli and one by junior
Shane Jeffery. Senior netminder
Nils Binstock made four saves in his career-best tenth shutout of the year, while Fiutowski ended the day with seven saves for the Purple Eagles.
The two teams will meet up again in the semifinals of the MAAC Men's Soccer Championship on Nov. 13. Iona enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed after sealing the regular season title, and Niagara will be seeded fourth. This year's MAAC Championship will be hosted by Fairfield.
