GAELS SURGE IN SECOND HALF AT LOYOLA, 77-65

Box Score BALTIMORE, MD - A 25-2 run to start the second half sparked the Iona College men's basketball team to a 77-65 win over Loyola in MAAC action at Reitz Arena. The Gaels (12-14, 7-8 MAAC) had four players with double digit scoring totals in the victory as the team rebounded from a tough defeat at Manhattan earlier this week.

Senior Devon Clarke tallied a team-best 15 points and grabbed six rebounds. He shot 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Sophomore Alejo Rodriguez posted 14 points and was 6-for-10 from the field. His two dunks during the decisive run sparked the Gaels on both sides of the ball. Sophomore co-captain Rashon Dwight posted 13 points. His contributions on the defensive end helped Iona to 13 steals on the night. Junior Milan Prodanovic chipped in 12 points to go along with six rebounds. He matched a career-best with five steals.

Iona never led in the first half but forced seven ties. Junior Brett Harvey's field goal at the 14:11 mark gave the Greyhounds (11-16, 6-9 MAAC) their largest lead of the frame, a seven-point 15-8 advantage. The Gaels trailed by a single point, 38-37 at the half.

After a Loyola field goal on its first possession, Rodriguez hit a layup off a nice feed from rookie Scott Machado in the first of a season-high 25 straight points for Iona. On the team's next possession, Machado hit a layup of his own to give Iona the lead for good. Prodanovic's three-pointer at the 11:46 mark capped the 25-0 run as the Gaels held a 62-40 advantage and never looked back.

Machado chipped in eight points, dished out four assists and had four steals.  Senior Gary Springer had nine points and two steals, while rookie Jermel Jenkins posted six points and two assists in the team's all-around effort.

Loyola sophomore Jamal Barney had a game-high 19 points to lead the home team.

The Gaels return to the Hynes Center on Monday night for a President's Day tilt with MAAC-leading Siena.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30 pm.
