GAELS HOLD OFF MARIST IN OT, 66-65

Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Rookie Scott Machado registered his second collegiate double-double with 15 points and 10 assists and senior Devon Clarke added 14 points off the bench as the Iona College men's basketball team held off Marist in MAAC action at the Hynes Center.  The Gaels (11-13, 6-7 MAAC) snapped a three-game losing streak and competed in their school record 10th game of the season separated by three points or less.  It was the sixth game of the year decided by a single point.

Sophomore Rashon Dwight posted a career-high 11 rebounds in the contest while senior Gary Springer had seven points and a game-high 12 boards in the victory.  Junior Jonathan Huffman added nine points for the Maroon & Gold.

Taking a three-point 28-25 lead into the second half, the Gaels held a single digit advantage over the Red Foxes (7-18, 3-10 MAAC) until the 10:30 mark when Marist's Kaylen Gregory hit a jumper to make the score 43-42.  Both sides traded leads for the rest of the half and were unable to get more than a three-point advantage.  Machado knotted the score at 56-56 with 26 seconds left in regulation with a free throw.   Marist senior Ryan Schneider had an opportunity for the gamewinner at the buzzer but his three-point attempt went off the mark.

The Gaels never trailed in overtime, taking as large as a four-point lead on three occasions.  Four straight Schneider free throws with less than 2:30 to go knotted the score at 60-60.  Machado followed with four straight points of his own, sinking two free throws and adding a layup at with 68 ticks left.  After the rookie point guard gave Iona its third four-point advantage with three 9.5 seconds left, the Red Foxes came down the floor and Schneider drained a three from the win to make the score 66-65 with just under three seconds remaining.  The Gaels were fouled and missed both free throws, but time had expired and the Maroon & Gold came away with the one-point victory.

Iona improved to 2-4 in one-point contests this season. The other win came in an overtime decision at Canisius earlier this season.   The Gaels out shot Marist 38.6%-34.9% and held a 44-43 advantage on the boards.

Schneider led Marist with 21 points and 11 rebounds.  Sophomore Lawrence Willams added 14 and nine off the bench.

The Gaels return on short rest on Monday night for a match-up with Metro area rival Manhattan at Draddy Gymnasium.  The game is slated to tip-off at 8:00 pm and is a part of a MAAC-TV doubleheader with both women's programs.
