NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Enduring rainy and windy conditions, the Iona College women's soccer team came up empty handed in the squad's home opener with a 3-0 loss to Monmouth.
The Gaels created several good chances to score, with freshman
Leah Taylor leading the way with a trio of shots on goal. The Maroon & Gold held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks, and goalkeeper
Kelly Mahoney made seven saves in the net.
Monmouth scored its first goal, an unassisted shot by Andrea Lopez, late in the first half and added two more in the second. Mary Wilks found the back of the net on a header following a free kick by Jackie Grodotzke in the 64th minute. BrieAnne Nomejko later padded the Hawks' lead with the final goal of the evening in the 77th minute.
Iona continues a two game homestand on Sep 13, hosting Bucknell at Mazzella Field at 2:00 pm.
