LATE GOAL COSTLY FOR IONA

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - With 2:46 to go in the second half, the Iona College women's soccer team gave up a costly goal to Bucknell, resulting in a 1-0 defeat.  The Gaels (1-5-1) were strong all day both offensively and defensively, but couldn't convert with six shot-on-goal attempts.

Iona had possibly its best chance to score on a shot by Sarah Porco in the 56th minute.  Porco dribbled the ball down field and made a short pass to Stephanie Sommers.  As Porco passed the Bison defenders, Sommers passed the ball back and Porco launched a shot that just missed to the right.

With less than seven minutes remaining in the game, it looked again as though the Maroon & Gold would break the scoreless tie.  Mariel Pepe tore down the field and managed to get past Bucknell's defense, but was called offsides before she could get a shot off.

In the 88th minute, the Bison netted the game winner as Jenna Tryon scored on a header off a corner kick by Caitlin Holtz.  Goalkeeper Suzanne Baldissard recorded a season-best nine saves.  For Bucknell, Colleen Garrehy made four saves before Kathryn Sutton came on in the second half and saved two.

Iona is back in action at Columbia on Sep. 15 with a 7:00 pm match-up.
