HANOVER, NH - Senior goalkeeper
Nils Binstock recorded his 18th career shutout - and third of the season - as the Iona College men's soccer team played to a scoreless tie against No. 18/24 UConn at the Nike Hypertherm Classic hosted by Dartmouth.
Binstock finished with four saves following 110 minutes of action. The Gaels' record moves to 3-1-1 while the Huskies are now 1-1-2.
Iona created early scoring attempts, including a corner and a cross by
Fernando Liserra which was cleared out of the box by Connecticut defender Kwame Watson-Siriboe. In the 17th minute, Binstock scooped up a ground shot by Husky Tony Cascio and later saved another shot in the 24th minute.
With 14 minutes remaining in the second half, Lisserra crossed the ball from the far side to
Giovanni Destasio, who's header was stopped by UConn keeper Josh Ford. The Maroon & Gold had another try a minute later when Alexander Haxhari broke free down the field but missed wide right on a one-on-one shot.
Neither side was able to make a dent during the two overtime periods, resulting in Iona's first tie of the year. Destasio,
Adam Rohan, and
Mario Rios accounted for Iona's three shots on goal, while both teams recorded eight shots.
The Gaels continue their non-conference schedule with the fifth of seven consecutive road games on Sep. 19. The squad faces Quinnipiac at 4:00 pm.
