SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Senior goalkeeper Suzanne Baldissard made a career-high 16 saves in the Iona College women's soccer team's 1-0 loss to Seton Hall on the road. The only goal of the night came on a misdirected header by a Gael defender that handed the Pirates the victory in the second half.
In the 58th minute, Seton Hall's Nicki Gross sent an indirect kick to the right side of the box that was headed by Stephanie Soma. In an effort to clear the ball out of scoring range, Iona headed the ball into its own net. The own goal would be the deciding factor in the 1-0 final.
"We settled into the game after ten or 15 minutes and really began to take over in the second half," said head coach Eric Teepe. "We had a lot of chances but couldn't find the back of the net and unfortunately had that mix-up in the box."
Juniors Diane Hare and Lauren Machtel each had two shots on goal to lead the Maroon & Gold while senior Mariel Pepe and freshman Gabriella D'Aprile each had one.
Iona continues a three game road set with this season's conference opener at Fairfield. The Gaels and Stags face off at 7:00 pm on Sep. 25.
