GAELS HELD SCORELESS IN MAAC OPENER

FAIRFIELD, CT - The Iona College women's soccer team fell to Fairfield in the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener by a score of 2-0.

Offensively the Gaels had five shots on goal, led by two from Carly Villanova.  The senior trio of Stephanie Sommers, Amber Blocher, and Mariel Pepe each added one.  Fourth-year goalkeeper Suzanne Baldissard recorded six saves in the loss.

Fairfield took a 1-0 lead on a header by Chrissie Sidie in the 22nd minute.  Sidie deposited the ball inside the far post off a header from 35 yards out taken by Alyssa Decker.  Kasey Schulz provided an insurance goal for the host Stags twelve minutes later, with a double-assist going to Allison Walsh and Jasmin Corniel.

Iona will have a brief gap in MAAC action with the final non-conference game of the season on Sep. 28.  The Gaels play at NJIT at 7:00 pm.
