Newark, NJ - The Iona College women's soccer team played its second overtime game of the season, this time defeating NJIT by a score of 2-1. The Gaels (3-8-1) ended a two-game draught with the victory in their final non-conference contest of 2009.
The Highlanders (3-5-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute on Michelle Borth's first goal of the year. Borth found the back of the net following a free kick from the right side by Meryl Hershfield. Just over five minutes later, Iona evened things up with Kerrie Deignan dribbling 15 yards down the field and scoring on NJIT goalie Sadie Mele.
After both teams tallied one in the first half, the second half went by scoreless to send the match into extra minutes. Freshman Gabriella D'Aprile netted the game winner for the Maroon & Gold nine minutes into the first overtime period to top off Iona's third win of the year. D'Aprile scored off a pass from Abby Dixon in the middle of the field.
The Gaels led 8-6 in shots on goal and 3-2 in corner kicks. Netminder Kelly Mahoney made five saves for Iona while Mele stopped six. The squad returns to MAAC action hosting back-to-back contests on Friday and Sunday. Iona and Siena square off at 3:00 pm on Oct. 2 in New Rochelle.
