ALBANY, NY - After winning the season opener against Stony Brook, the Iona College women's soccer team is now 1-3 on the road to start the season following a 2-0 defeat at Albany.
With just over five minutes remaining in the first half, the Great Danes' Makenzie Baratta netted a shot to the far post from 20 yards out off the right side. Albany added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute on a header by Ashley Tirabassi.
"We came out a little flat in the first half and because of that they were able to put pressure on us, said head coach
Eric Teepe. "We had some good chances in the second half, but then gave up a goal late on the counter."
The Gaels recorded eight shots on goal - including two each by
Abby Dixon and
Leah Taylor and one by
Mariel Pepe,
Diane Hare,
Lauren Machtel, and
Kendra Chisolm - but all eight were saved. Iona goalkeeper
Kelly Mahoney made a career-high 13 saves, topping her previous best of 12 set last season at Sacramento State.
The Maroon & Gold will play its fifth straight road contest at Maine on Sunday (Sep. 6) before returning to New Rochelle for the home opener on Sep. 11.
