NEW ROCHELLE, NY - In its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchup of the 2009-10 season, the Iona College women's basketball team was defeated by Loyola at the Hynes Center. The 71-59 loss dropped the Gaels to 4-8 overall with an 0-1 mark to begin league play while the Greyhounds evened their overall record at 6-6.
Freshman
Diana Hubbard led the way for Iona with a team-best 12 points along with six rebounds and an assist.
Anna McLean just missed a double-double with nine points while her 17 rebounds were the most for the senior since she had 19 in the season opener. Junior co-captain
Suzi Fregosi added ten points, three rebounds, four assists, and a game-high three steals.
For the Greyhounds, sophomore Miriam McKenzie was impressive with a game-leading 20 points and seven assists added to her 11 rebounds.
The contest ended a seven-game winning streak held by Iona in the series between the two teams as Loyola picked up its first win over the Gaels since January 25, 2007.
Iona will try again for its first league win of the year when it faces Manhattan on the road at 7:00 pm on Jan. 5.
