FAIRFIELD, CT - The Iona men's swimming and diving team picked up a split at their three team meet on Saturday. The Gaels were victorious over Fairfield by the score of 157.50 - 124.50, but were outscored by Loyola 157 - 111.
"We saw development in many areas," said coach Nick Cavataro, "at the end of the day we had a remarkable 22 out of a possible 28 new school records recorded in the short course pool."
In the men's 200 meter medley relay, the team of Ed Gronkowski, Matthew Magura, Will Kolodgie and Seth Tasman finished second with a time of 1:51.50, breaking the previous school mark of 1:53.93. The team of Michael Wu, Kristian Bocage, Trevor Creighton and Graham Weir was sixth with a time of 1:54.96.
Joseph De Leone was second in the 800 meter freestyle with a time of 8:50.83, breaking the previous mark of 9:40.54. Zach Benoit was fourth with a time of 8:58.72.
In the 200 meter freestyle, David Gartman was third with a time of 1:59.90, breaking the previous school mark of 2:00.18, while Kolodgie was sixth with a time of 2:03.91.
In the 100 meter backstroke, Chris Durette took sixth for the Gaels with a time of 1:06.06. Gronkowski was just behind in seventh with a time of 1:07.75.
In the 100 meter breaststroke, Chris Yacobacci took second with a time of 1:06.80, breaking the previous school mark of 1:10.71, just .21 seconds behind first. Magura was third with a time of 1:08.12.
Kolodgie secured second in the 200 meter butterfly with a time of 2:13.64, breaking the previous school mark of 2:34.83. Wu was seventh with a time of 2:19.58.
Gronkowski was fourth with a time of 25.07 in the 50 meter freestyle, while Weir was seventh with a time of 25.31.
Gartman tied with Paul Bimmler of Fairfield in the 100 meter freestyle with a time of 53.91, breaking the previous school mark of 55.93. Gronkowski was sixth with a time of 55.74.
Durette took fifth in the 200 meter backstroke with a time of 2:26.04, breaking the previous school mark of 2:27.79, while Wu was seventh with a time of 2:27.30.
Yacobacci took first in the 200 meter breaststroke with a time of 2:25.29, breaking the previous school mark of 2:46.76. Magura was fourth with a time of 2:35.03.
De Leone was first in the 400 meter freestyle with a time of 4:13.37, breaking the previous school mark of 4:18.28. Raymond Joyal was fourth for the Gaels with a time of 4:23.84.
Kolodgie took fourth in the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 1:00.19, breaking the previous school mark of 1:01.89. Patrick O'Reilly was tenth, clocking in at 1:03.61.
Yacobacci was second in the 200 meter IM with a time of 2:15.95, breaking the previous school mark of 2:23.31. Gartman was just behind in third with a time of 2:16.01.
The Iona team of Yacobacci, De Leone, Weir and Gartman took second in the 400 meter freestyle relay with a time of 3:43.56, breaking the previous school record of 3:56.65. The time of Creighton, Durette, Benoit and Joyal was fifth with a time of 3:53.98.
In diving, Daniel Plager took fourth in the three meter with 133.20 points.
The Gaels return to the water at the MAAC Championships in Baltimore Feb. 11 - 13.
