NEW ROCHELLE, NY - After mounting a late surge, the Iona College women's soccer team ran out of time in a 2-1 loss to local rival Manhattan in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at home. The Gaels (3-10-1, 1-1-1 MAAC) cut a 2-0 defecit in half with 15 minutes to go in the game.
Manhattan (3-9-1, 1-3-0 MAAC) opened a 1-0 lead early on with a goal by Caroline Morse in the 12th minute. Morse beat Iona goalkeeper
Trista Rivera with a shot into the left side of the net with an assist from Alex Iovine to record her fifth tally of the season. The Jaspers added on to their halftime lead just over six minutes into the second period as Kayla Howden knocked in a slow roller after Rivera was pulled out of the net.
Iona staged a late comeback, halving Manhattan's 2-0 lead in the 75th minute. Junior
Kerrie Deignan earned her first goal of the season following a series of passes from freshman
Christina Tesoriero and sophomore
Gabriella D'Aprile.
The Gaels threatened to tie the score several times in the closing minutes. A header by senior
Diane Hare hit the left post and bounded around in front of the goal before being cleared by the Manhattan defense. Later, a shot by
Leah Taylor went wide left and a header by
Abby Dixon with 5:46 remaining soared over the crossbar.
Rivera finished with five saves, while Kara Davis saved four for the Jaspers. The Maroon & Gold embarks on a two-game road trip beginning with a 7:00 pm contest at Rider on Oct. 15.
