NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team evened its conference record to 2-2 with a 2-0 shutout victory over Siena at Mazzella Field. The Gaels (4-7-1, 2-2) have now won two of their last three while ending a three-game winning streak for the Saints (5-6-1, 2-1). Going back to the 2004 campaign, the Maroon & Gold is 5-1-1 in its last seven meetings against Siena.
Iona got on the scoreboard in the 21st minute with senior captain
Roberto Hernandez-Raaen's second goal of the season. Hernandez-Raaen headed the ball past Siena goalkeeper Phil Chabot off a cross from
Mario Rios. The Gaels outperformed the Saints by a 10-3 shot margin in the first half and led 17-7 in shots for the game.
Julian Grajales helped seal the win in the 64th minute as he recorded his first goal of the year to put Iona ahead 2-0.
Victor Munoz sent a corner kick into the box, where it was tapped from
Douglas Stephens to Grajales who buried it into the net.
Munoz led all players with six shots on the afternoon, including two shots on goal. Chabot ended up with five saves for the Saints. For Iona,
Jesse Fullerton had two saves in his second career shutout.
The Gaels conclude a three-game home stand on Saturday, Oct. 23. The squad hosts Fairfield during homecoming weekend.
