NIAGARA TOPS IONA, 2-0

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team lost a 2-0 decision to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Rider to begin homecoming weekend at Mazzella Field.  The Gaels (3-13-1, 1-4-1 MAAC) were held scoreless for the third straight contest despite mounting a 17-10 lead in shots and a 9-4 edge in shots on goal.

Jamie Raepple was the hero of the afternoon for the Purple Eagles, recording her fifth and sixth goals of the season.  Raepple put Niagara on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute when she beat Iona goalkeeper Trista Rivera in a one-on-one match up with a shot from the left side.  Raepple added the insurance goal in the 76th minute off a pass from Erin Baker.

Kerrie Deignan and rookie Carly Haden led the Maroon & Gold offensively with five shots apiece, a season-high for both.  Rivera made two saves in net.  For Niagara, Ashleigh Bowers had eight saves before being relieved by Gabrielle Wilson, who made one save over the final 1:56.

The Gaels resume play on Sunday against Canisius at noon.
