NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team posted a 2-0 homecoming victory over Fairfield at Mazzella Field. The Gaels (5-7-1, 3-2 MAAC) have now won three of their last four contests and picked up back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
Three of Iona's rookies got in on the scoring action, with
Orlando Castaneda recording his first career goal in the second half and
Victor Munoz and
Samuel Adjei each contributing an assist. Senior
Mario Rios put the Gaels on the scoreboard with a first half marker, his first of the year.
With two seconds left on the clock in the opening period, Munoz fed Rios, who snuck a shot past Stags goalkeeper Michael O'Keeffe to hit the buzzer beater and send Iona to the locker room with a 1-0 lead. The Maroon & Gold outshot Fairfield 8-1 in the first half and 18-6 in the game.
Castaneda registered the add-on goal in the 79th minute which led to the 2-0 final. O'Keeffe ended the day with four saves for the visiting Stags, while
Jesse Fullerton saved five for the Gaels. The shutout was Fullerton's third.
Iona continues MAAC action at Saint Peter's on Oct. 29.
