GAELS OVERCOME IN TOUGH ROAD LOSS

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Iona College men's soccer team (5-8-1, 3-3 MAAC) was defeated by a score of 1-0 in a tough conference loss to Saint Peter's on the road.  Senior MF Mario Rios led the Gaels with two shots on goal.

The Peacocks' Mauricio Jimenez scored the lone goal of the match in the 8th minute and the hosts held on to get the win.  Jimenez scored at 7:11 off a cross from Harry Newman.  Iona was outnumbered 10-7 in shots and 5-2 in corner kicks in the contest.

The Gaels threatened to even the close margin on a pair of occasions; the first when a shot by Rios was saved by Peacock goalie Carlos Suarez at the ten minute mark and later as an attempt by Marcellin Bilali hit the post in the 52nd minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jesse Fullerton guarded the Iona net for the full 90 minutes, picking up six saves.  For Saint Peter's, Suarez earned the shutout with three saves.

Iona looks to keep its MAAC tournament hopes alive with a victory at Manhattan on Sunday.  The Gaels and Jaspers square off at 10:00 am in Riverdale.
