BALTIMORE, MD - Unable to repeat the come-from-behind victory that advanced them past the semifinals, the Iona College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 season-ending loss to Saint Peter's in the title match of the 2010 Chick-fil-A MAAC Championship.
The Gaels started their way out of a 2-0 hole in the 66th minute, cutting the spread in half on senior MF
Julian Grajales' fourth goal of the year. Freshman F
Orlando Castaneda and sophomore D
Robbie Krohmer assisted on the tally. Iona nearly evened the score in the 74th minute, but the squad's potential game-tying goal was withheld due to an offsides call.
Seconds prior to the violation, a shot by senior MF
Mario Rios was a near-miss as the ball hit the post. Rios added another shot in the 83rd minute, the final attempt of the day for the Gaels, but Peacock goalkeeper Carlos Suarez made the save.
Saint Peter's took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick by Lebogang Pila in the 25th minute. Freshman D
Marcellin Bilali was sent off with a red card, which led to the penalty attempt being awarded and forced Iona to play one man down for the rest of the match.
In the 59th minute, Pila sent a pass to the left side to Mauricio Jimenez, who took a shot from ten yards out and sent the ball into the right side of the net to make it 2-0 in favor of the Peacocks.
Sophomore
Michael Jordan posted a career-high six saves in goal for Iona, while Suarez recorded two saves for Saint Peter's. The Gaels held a 4-3 lead in corner kicks in the contest.
Senior trio of Grajales, Rios, and
Roberto Hernandez-Raaen were named to the All-Tournament Team.
