Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College men's basketball junior
Mike Glover exploded for 39 points and was one of four Gaels to record 10 or more points in a 94-85 win over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Hynes Center. Glover posted his third double-double in four contests with a team best 14 rebounds in Iona's (4-3, 1-0 MAAC) fourth straight win.
Junior
Scott Machado also posted a double-double with 18 points and 11 assists and remarkably only one turnover. Junior
Jermel Jenkins had 16 points with the help of four three pointers while sophomore
Kyle Smyth added 12 points in the win. Senior
Alejo Rodriguez recorded 12 rebounds for the Gaels
The Gaels trailed by seven points out of the gate when the Griffs' Gaby Belardo hit a jumper that made the score 14-7 at the 15:27 mark. Canisius did not relinquish the lead until 7:18 when Glover converted a layup. With the score tied at 32, the Maroon & Gold quickly went on a 13-2 run with the assistance of eight straight points by Jenkins and another five to end the half by Machado.
Iona maintained a double-digit cushion for most of the second half and led by as many as 18 points after a nifty alley-oop from Machado to Glover at 10:47. The Griffs kept fighting though and got to within five points with just over two minutes to play. Back-to-back three pointers by Smyth and Jenkins though gave Iona back its double-digit cushion and virtually sealed the win for the Gaels.
Glover shot 15-of-23 from the field and 9-for-11 from the line. His 39 points matched the sixth-highest single game total in school history and was the most since Steve Burtt, Jr. netted 38 in a MAAC-TV doubleheader on President's Day in 2005 against Marist at the Arena at Harbor Yard. It was one point shy of the Hynes Center record for Iona set by Burtt's father, Steve, Sr. on Feb. 1, 1984. Glover's third double-double of the year is second in the MAAC to Siena's Ryan Rossiter with five.
With two double-doubles, Machado is tied for third with Manhattan's Rhamel Brown and George Beamon. He is the lone player in the MAAC to record a points-assist double-double so far this season. Machado ranks first the league in both assists (7.3/g) and steals (2.6/g) with his four steals in the contest.
The team's 94 points marked the first time the Gaels netted 90+ points since a 92-68 win over Loyola on Dec. 3, 2007. It was also the last time Iona won its conference opening contest.
Canisius senior Elton Frazier posted 26 points and nine rebounds while his classmate Julius Coles had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
The Gaels host Niagara on Sunday at 2:00 pm to complete their three-game week.
