Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona College men's basketball junior
Mike Glover completed an incredible three-game stretch with a third straight double-double leading the Gaels (5-3, 2-0) to an 82-58 win over Niagara in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Hynes Center. Glover scored 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in leading Iona to its fifth straight win.
After trailing for the only time in the game, 7-6 just 2:33 into the contest, the Gaels used a 26-5 run over the next 7:10 to build a 20-point lead and cruised to the 24-point victory.
Glover shot 14-for-17 from the field and 2-for-3 from the line. His only misses coming on his first attempt of the contest that was cleaned up by senior
Alejo Rodriguez and two 18-foot jumpers later on in the contest. In the Gaels three wins this week, Glover averaged 29.7 points and 12.7 rebounds.
Sophomore
Kyle Smyth chipped in 17 points with the help of five three-pointers. He added four rebounds and a team-best three steals. Rodriguez posted 11 points and seven rebounds, shooting 5-for-6 from the field. Junior
Scott Machado had his second straight 11-assist effort while adding nine points and seven rebounds in the win. Entering the contest, Machado led the MAAC and was fifth in the nation in assists and has improved his average to 7.8 per game.
Junior
Jermel Jenkins had a tough shooting day with just five points but added six assists and two steals with no turnovers. Sophomore forward
Chris Pelcher contributed a career-best eight points with the help of a 6-for-6 free throw shooting effort and had four rebounds in 16 minutes of play off the bench.
Niagara (2-6, 0-2 MAAC) senior Anthony Nelson led his squad with 16 points, six rebounds and six assists while freshman Marvin Jordan had 12 points and four assists in the loss.
The Gaels are back in action in two games this week in non-conference action with Northeast Conference foes. Iona travels to Metro area rival Long Island University in Brooklyn on Wednesday (Dec. 8) before hosting Fairleigh Dickinson at the Hynes Center on Saturday (Dec. 11).
