BROOKLYN, NY - The Iona College men's basketball team used a late second half scoring spurt to hold off Long Island University in an 88-82 win in non-conference action at the Wellness Center. Leading by one with 3:20 to play, the Gaels (6-3) scored nine straight points over the next two plus minutes to seal the victory.
Junior 
Mike Glover - the reigning National, ECAC and MAAC Player of the Week - had his fourth straight double-double tallying a game-high 28 points and 10 rebounds. Junior 
Scott Machado had his third straight game with double-digit assists and missed a triple-double by just three rebounds. He tallied 13 points with 10 assists and seven boards. Senior 
Alejo Rodriguez shot 6-of-8 from the field and posted 13 points and nine boards. Junior 
Jermel Jenkins scored 11 despite a tough shooting night from the field.
 
Iona built a double-digit lead with less than eight minutes to play in the first half and went into halftime with a 45-32 advantage. The squad led by as many as 15 on a Rodriguez layup with 15:09 to play. The Blackbirds chipped away at their deficit though and tied the score at 64-64 less than eight minutes later. The Maroon & Gold bent but didn't break. Long Island took their only advantage of the second half on two free throws by C.J. Garner at the 5:57 mark. Jenkins drained a three on the next possession to give Iona a two-point advantage. LIU would tie the score twice but after a Rodriguez dunk in transition, the Gaels began its decisive run in earning its third straight road win and sixth consecutive victory overall.
Glover was 12-of-15 from the field with four of his second half field goals coming on thunderous dunks. He's averaged 32.3 points over the last three contests. Combining with Rodriguez' 6-for-8, the Gaels withstood a poor shooting night from outside, shooting just 6-of-29 from behind the arc. Brooklyn native 
Sean Armand drained three striaght three-pointers wrapping around halftime for a season-high nine points off the bench.
 
Iona looks to make it seven in a row on Saturday afternoon when they host Fairleigh Dickinson at the Hynes Center at 2:00 pm.
