JERSEY CITY, NJ - In the final road contest of the 2009-10 regular season, the Iona College women's basketball team cruised to a 57-41 victory over Saint Peter's in MAAC action at the Yanitelli Center. With the win, the Gaels (16-11, 12-4) clinched second place in the regular season standings.
Thazina Cook recorded her second consecutive double-double, leading the Maroon & Gold with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Diana Hubbard added ten points followed by nine from
Kristina Ford.
Suzi Fregosi had a game-high five assists while
Marissa Flagg led the squad with four steals.
Charlene Riddick was the lone Peahen to reach double figures with ten points.
Iona scored the first two baskets of the game to lead 4-0 at the 16:43 mark. Alena Ali knocked down a three-pointer to bring Saint Peter's within one, and Quiana Porter added two good free throws which gave the Peahens their only lead of the day at 5-4. Iona then went on an 18-5 run to lead by 12 with 5:56 remaining in the first half and went into the break with a 28-18 edge.
The Gaels increased the advantage to 23 points in the second half, outscoring Saint Peter's 17-4 over the first eight minutes. The Peahens' 41 points were the fewest given up by Iona all year.
The Gaels wrap up the regular season with a two-game homestand, hosting Marist on Feb. 26 and Rider on the 28th.
