Anna McLean and
Thazina Cook, the Iona College women's basketball team ended the 2009-10 regular season with a 79-43 victory over Rider in MAAC action at the Hynes Center. The Gaels led wire to wire with the exception of a 2-2 tie less than two minutes into the contest.
McLean led Iona with a double-double on 19 points and ten rebounds with an 8-for-10 shooting performance. Cook followed closely with 17 points and had a game-high five steals along with two rebounds, two assists, and two blocks.
Kristina Ford (13 pts, four steals) and
Catherine Lutz (11 pts) rounded out the Gaels in double figures while
Diana Hubbard scored nine.
Iona capitalized on Rider's 32 turnovers, outscoring the Broncs 36-8 in points off turnovers. Iona also led 36-8 in points in the paint and the Gael bench added 19 points compared to Rider's eight.
With the win, Iona tied its program record for MAAC wins at 13 and ends the regular season at 17-12 overall (13-5 MAAC). As the No. 2 seed heading into next weekend's MAAC Championship, Iona will face the winner of the first round game between No. 7 Siena and No. 10 Rider. The Gaels' quarterfinal match-up will take place at 9:30 am on Mar. 5.
