NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team earned its first win of the season in a 1-0 shutout over non-league opponent Stony Brook. The Gaels are now 1-3-0 to start the year while the Seawolves dropped to 0-3-0.
The game-winner came off the foot of veteran
Abby Dixon, who picked up her first goal of the season in the 34th minute. Iona's
Lauren Machtel had attempted a shot seconds beforehand on which Stony Brook goalie Chelsea Morales made a diving save to her right. Rookie
Carly Haden came up with the ball and made the feed to Dixon, who sent it into the back of the net for the lone goal of the afternoon.
Iona's defense, led by senior
Diane Hare, was solid all day to keep the visiting Seawolves off the scoreboard. Freshman netminder
Trista Rivera made four saves to pick up her first career victory. Morales had six saves for Stony Brook. Offensively, Iona led 7-4 in shots on goal.
The Gaels return to action on Sep. 1, taking on Albany in a 3:00 pm match-up on the road.
