ALBANY, NY - After giving up an early goal, the Iona College women's soccer team was unable to come up with an equalizer as the squad was dealt a 1-0 loss on the road at Albany. "While the loss was tough to take, I can see that we are playing better as each game progresses," said head coach
Eric Teepe. "If we can continue that, we will have much success this year."
The Gaels (1-4) attempted eleven shots in the contest, led by three each from senior MF/D
Lauren Machtel and sophomore D
Leah Taylor. Taylor had two shots on goal while Machtel,
Kerrie Deignan, and
Carly Haden each had one, but all were denied by Albany (1-2) goalkeeper Breanna Maggio.
Rookie goalie
Trista Rivera was in net for the Gaels in the first half and earned one save.
Jacquelyn Gates came on in the second half, making four saves.
The Great Danes scored the lone goal of the contest in the 15th minute. Chrissy Klepper sent in a cross from the left side to Chelsea DeVerna, who rifled a shot into the back of the net. The Gaels took five corner kicks in the game, including four in the closing 45 minutes.
Iona returns to action at the Best Western Huntington Mall Invitation hosted by Marshall University. The Gaels will face Appalachian State on Sep. 3 and Radford on Sep. 5.
