GARDEN CITY, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team was held out of the net in its first road contest of the season, falling to Adelphi by a score of 2-0. After winning their season opener, the loss was the second straight for the Gaels who are now 1-2 to begin the year. The Panthers improved their record to 3-2.
Adelphi scored one goal early and then closed the door with a late goal to seal the decision. In the ninth minute, Issa Tall collected the ball, cut through two Iona defenders, and chipped it past Gael goalkeeper
Jesse Fullerton to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. The Panthers were awarded a penalty kick in the 82nd minute, which Alex Kouznetsov converted to end the scoring.
Both sides were level at seven shots apiece. Sophomore
Douglas Stephens had two shots on goal to lead the Maroon & Gold, with freshmen
Victor Munoz and
Franklin Castellanos each adding one. Fullerton played the full 90 minutes in goal and picked up two saves.
The Gaels will aim to even their record in their next contest against South Carolina on Sep. 17. The game is the first of two Iona is set to play at the South Carolina-hosted Gamecock Classic.
