NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team lost a 2-1 decision to Sacred Heart in non-conference action at Mazzella Field.  The fourth season goal for sophomore Douglas Stephens was the only mark the Gaels (2-3-1) would put on the board as the squad came up one shy.

The Maroon & Gold was dominant in the first half, emerging to an 11-4 lead in shots by the midway point but having nothing to show for it on the scoreboard.  The Pioneers (5-2-0) moved in front 1-0 in the 52nd minute on a long 35 yard kick by Edwin Victor.  Despite good height on the save attempt by Iona goalkeeper Jesse Fullerton, he couldn't get a hand on the ball as it soared over his head into the top of the net.

Thirteen minutes later, Sacred Heart added to its lead with a Brian Francolini tally, assisted by Patrick Daka.  Iona cut the advantage down to one with Stephens' marker in the 71st minute off a feed from Mario Rios.  The Gaels threatened to even things up several times over the last 20 minutes.  Julian Grajales made a final attempt for the squad with ten to go, but the shot went wide.

Iona ended the day ahead 25-11 in shots and 6-2 in corner kicks.  Fullerton made four saves in goal while Alex Fait saved five for Sacred Heart.  The Gaels continue non-league play on the road at St. Joseph's on Sep. 25.
