LEWISBURG, PA - A good penalty kick by sophomore
Gabriella D'Aprile cut the difference in half late, but the Iona College women's soccer team came up one goal short in a 2-1 road loss to non-conference opponent Bucknell (2-10). The Gaels (2-9) start the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference portion of their schedule with three straight at home, beginning with a match against Fairfield on Oct. 1.
Iona goalkeeper
Trista Rivera made five saves in the first period to help the contest stay scoreless through halftime, then was relieved by
Jacquelyn Gates for the second half. The Bison struck first with a 63rd minute goal by Caitlin Holtz. Holtz picked up her first tally of the year when her 35-yard shot hit the underside of the crossbar and crossed the line.
Just 1:20 later, Bucknell went up 2-0 on a Liz Dwornik marker with an assist from Casey Crowley. The Maroon & Gold made some noise when D'Aprile nailed a penalty shot in the 74th minute to bring the team to within one, but that was the closest Iona would get.
