FLUSHING, NY - The Iona College men's water polo team was unable to find the golden goal as the Gaels fell to Queens College 15-14 in sudden death overtime Wednesday evening. Queens College's Vanja Kopilas scored with 47 seconds left in sudden death to give the Knights the victory.
Iona led 5-2 before a three goal run in the first half by Queens College knotted the contest. Trading goals, the game was tied at 7 before senior Seth Tasman beat the halftime buzzer with a shot to give Iona an 8-7 lead at the break.
Both teams exchanged goals throughout the second half with Queens College gaining a deadlock at 13 with 2:50 remaining in regulation.
Iona went ahead 14-13 when Tasman scored with 40 seconds to go in the first of two three minute overtime periods. They held the lead until Kopilas tied the score at 14 with his second goal of the evening with 21 seconds remaining in OT number two before hitting the eventual game winner in sudden death.
"Queens really converted on their man up opportunities this evening," said Coach Brian Kelly. "They also fought back and answered every goal we scored. We need to continue to work on finding ways to put teams away once we get a lead.
Tasman had five goals and an assist for the Gaels. Defensively Tasman had four field blocks and drew a kickout. Junior
Trevor Creighton had four goals and drew two kickouts before leaving in the second half with an injury. Sophomore
Kristian Bocage had two goals and two assists to go along with a block and a steal. Junior
Matt Joslyn had a goal and two assists while classmate Cemeron Hudson found the net for Iona.
Freshman
Stefen Hill had nine saves in net. The Gaels host Brown (3:00 pm) and Connecticut College (8:00 pm) Saturday at the Hynes Athletics Center Pool.
