NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's basketball team wrapped up a 2-0 home weekend with a 73-58 victory over Canisius. The Gaels (7-13, 3-5 MAAC) extended their winning streak in the series with the Griffs (6-13, 2-6 MAAC) to three games going back to last season while earning back-to-back wins for just the second time this year.
Iona ran up a 19-0 advantage to open the contest, holding Canisius off the scoreboard for the first 7:24 and leading from start to finish. The Maroon & Gold never let the Golden Griffins get closer than 14 points, and led by as many as 22 early in the second half.
The stingy Iona defense had 14 steals on the day and forced 25 Canisius turnovers, eight of which came in the first seven minutes of play. Twenty-six of the Gaels' 40 first-half points were off turnovers as the squad went on to lead 39-8 in points off turnovers in the game.
Kristina Ford led Iona in both scoring and rebounding with 18 points and eight boards to go along with four steals and one assist.
Tomica Bacic followed her career-best performance on Friday night with 15 points, six rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal.
Marissa Flagg had a team-leading six steals and five assists.
For Canisius, Jamie Ruttle was the lone player to reach double figures with ten points. Ashley Durham led the Griffs with six assists and, along with Melissa Gardner, grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
Iona returns to action on Jan. 28 in a 7:00 pm tilt at Siena.
