NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team returned home for Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play Friday evening to take on Rider. The Gaels scored late in the second half to force a scoreless overtime and the two squads tied 1-1.
After playing to a scoreless first half, the Broncs took the lead on a goal by Abi Cottam in the 53rd minute. With the Gaels' chance at victory running out, Iona was able to knot the game in the 88th minute on a goal by junior
Leah Taylor.
As time ran out in regulation, the Gaels and Broncs prepared for overtime but both teams were unable to crack the scoreboard in the extra frame. The Gaels outshot Rider 5-2 in overtime, and 16-9 overall for the contest. Sophomore netminder
Trista Rivera recorded six saves, while her Rider counterpart Danielle Singson made five stops.
The Gaels sit in fourth place in the MAAC with a conference record of 3-2-1 with three games remaining. The team returns to the field for their final home contest of the year Sunday afternoon when they host Loyola at 12:00 pm.
