FAIRFIELD, CT - After 85 minutes of scoreless soccer, senior F
Kerrie Deignan knocked in the game-winning goal to lead the Iona College women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout victory at Fairfield. The Gaels (3-8-2, 2-1-0 MAAC) now hold a two game winning streak while the Stags (3-5-3, 1-2-0 MAAC) have dropped three straight.
"Tonight was all about heart," said head coach
Mike Barroqueiro. "We put together a game plan and the girls executed it to a 'T'."
With five minutes remaining in regulation, Fairfield played the ball back towards the goal from just inside its defensive half of the field. The ball came up short and Deignan was able to beat her defender and a charging Kelly Boudreau to the ball, touch it past, and put it into the empty net.
Sophomore GK
Trista Rivera faced five shots on net and stopped them all, with four saves in the second half. Boudreau picked up two saves for Fairfield.
"Hats off to Fairfield, they are an incredibly talented and well coached team and it took everything we had to put together a good performance tonight," Barroqueiro added. "I'm so proud of our girls, we've come such a long way. It's a really exciting time to be a Gael."
The Gaels look to build upon the excitement in a pair of road games next weekend. The team will face Saint Peter's on Oct. 14 and Manhattan on Oct. 16.
