The 26-point victory marked the largest margin against a BCS opponent in school history, topping an 81-57 victory over Georgia Tech on Jan. 4, 1983. It was the Gaels first double-digit win since defeating Iowa State 89-72 in the 2005 Cyclone Classic championship game on Nov. 26, 2005. It was Iona's sixth win over a current ACC squad and first since defeating North Carolina at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 27, 2002. With 89 points, the Gaels missed scoring 90 points in three straight games for the first time in program history by just a single-point. It's Iona's highest three-game point scoring stretch since recording the same number from Feb. 8-15, 2006.
A slow start out of the gate saw the Gaels trail 5-0 early. After Sean Mosley's three-pointer put the Terrapins ahead 12-7 at the 14:42 mark, the Gaels scored six straight in the next minute capped by senior
Mike Glover's layup at 13:25 and the Maroon & Gold led 13-12. Maryland briefly regained the lead on its next possession, but junior
Kyle Smyth's layup 10 seconds later, put Iona ahead for good.
With a one-point, 22-21 lead with 7:18 remaining in the half, the Gaels scored 11 of the next 13 points in the contest to go ahead by double-digits for the first time in the game. The Terps rallied for a 9-2 run to cut their deficit to three points at the break.
Maryland scored first in the half to cut the margin to one, but it was all Gaels throughout the rest of the half. An 8-0 run gave Iona a 45-36 lead an alley oop from Machado to Glover with 17:31 to play gave the team a nine-point advantage. The Gaels led by 14 points with 13:19 on the clock. The Terps put forth their last great push scoring seven in a row over the next three minutes. It was Iona's turn to run as 12 straight points over a three minute span capped by senior

Junior
Lamont Jones scored 17 of his game-high 22 points in the second half. He shot 8-for-14 from the field and 5-for-6 from the line while adding four rebounds. Glover posted his second double-double of the year with 19 points and 10 boards. He shot 9-of-14 from the field with two steals.
Iona's MVP
Scott Machado continued to put up gaudy numbers with his 15-and-15 effort adding four rebounds and three steals. Remarkably, he had zero turnovers in the contest. In Machado's three double-doubles, he shattered the tournament's record of 22 set in 2008 by USC's Daniel Hackett. The single game mark entering the weekend was 10 in last year's championship game by West Virginia's Joe Mazzulla. Machado eclipsed the mark in each game this season. Machado's weekend numbers included 46 points (15.3/g), 41 assists (13.7/g), a 51.5% shooting effort from the field and just six turnovers (2.0/g).
The Gaels shot 55.2% from the field for the game and 65.7% in the decisive second half. After allowing Maryland to shoot 61.9% in the first Iona held their opponent to 35.5% in the second.
Iona's "Big Three" was supported nicely by Dezouvre, Smyth and sophomore
Sean Armand. Smyth had nine points and four rebounds, Dezouvre added eight points, four boards and three steals while Armand added seven points in the victory. The Gaels posted 22 assists to 10 turnovers while Maryland had just nine assists and 26 turnovers in the loss.
Mosley led Maryland with 21 points. Leading scorer Terrell Stolin was held under his season average, scoring 17 points on 17 shot attempts. Ashton Pankey pasted 11 rebounds in the loss.
The Gaels return home for a two-game homestand on Wednesday night, Thanksgiving Eve when they host Saint Joseph's at 7:00 pm at the Hynes Center.
