RIVERDALE, NY - The Iona College women's basketball team's streak of three straight wins over Manhattan ended with a 63-47 defeat in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at Draddy Gymnasium. The Gaels are now 5-9 in MAAC play (9-17 overall) after dropping four in a row.
Iona opened the contest with a 2-0 lead, scoring off the tip on a layup by
Kristina Ford. A Monica Roeder three-pointer was followed by back-to-back treys from
Diana Hubbard and
Anda Ivkovic to put the Gaels ahead 8-3 by the 17:42 mark.
The Maroon & Gold held a five point advantage twice more in the opening half; leading 11-6 at 14:47 and 13-8 at 11:49. The Jaspers (19-6, 11-3 MAAC) tied the game at 13-all and used an 11-3 run to take over, 19-16, with 6:37 to go in the period. Iona would close to within one, but never led again in the game.
Hubbard and Ford both had nine points to lead the Gaels.
Tomica Bacic added eight points, and
Milica Paligoric pulled down a team-high five rebounds. Four different players handed out two assists each.
Manhattan extended its winning streak to seven games and set a new program record for wins during the regular season with 19. Roeder set the pace with 19 points and seven rebounds, followed by ten points from Abby Wentworth.
The Gaels play their next two games in Western NY, visiting Canisius at 7:00 pm on Feb. 18 and Niagara at 2:00 pm on the 20th.
