NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team continued its action-filled Spring with three more exhibition contests. The Gaels hosted Lafayette at Mazzella Field, playing to a 1-1 draw. The Leopards benefitted from a questionable call on a set piece, resulting in an own goal by Iona. The Maroon & Gold later evened the score with a penalty kick by
Samuel Adjei. Adjei's third goal of the Spring came after Lafayette was tagged for a hand ball in the box. The Gaels also saw strong performances from
Adam Rohan,
Franklin Castellanos, and
Alexander Abdalla.
The following weekend, Iona traveled to Binghamton University where the squad faced Colgate of the Patriot League and the BIG EAST's Syracuse. The Gaels defeated Colgate convincingly, dominating the Raiders in a 2-0 win. Iona netted goals by
MJ Nestor and Abdalla, with
Castellanos picking up an assist on the latter.
Syracuse won the second game, 3-2, scoring one of its three goals in a situation reminiscent of Thierry Henry's handball in the France vs. Ireland 2010 World Cup qualifier match. Iona's first goal was scored by Doug Stephens with help from
Orlando Castaneda, with Castaneda registering the second goal off an assist from
Mario Di Miceli.
Off the field, the Gaels participated in the athletic department's annual celebration of National Student Athlete Day.
Julian Grajales earned the Gael of the Year Award for men's soccer and
Alvaro Torrecilla was named Iona's Male Scholar Athlete of the Year with a 3.97 GPA. The academic award is given to one male and one female individual for having achieved the highest cumulative GPA among all student-athletes.
