Women's Soccer Topped by Vermont, 1-0

BURLINGTON, VT - On the heels of its first win of 2011, the Iona College soccer team was held scoreless in a 1-0 defeat to Vermont on the road.  The Gaels are now 1-3 on the year while the Catamounts moved to 2-1-1 with their second straight victory.

The lone goal of the contest came in the 18th minute, when Vermont's Alexandra Dezenzo crossed in a ball from the right flank.  Her teammate, Haley Marks knocked it down at the top of the penalty box and fired a shot into the left side of the net with her second touch to put the hosts ahead 1-0.

Iona's six shots in the contest were spread evenly over both halves.  All three of the squad's second-half attempts were on goal, but all three were stopped by Catamount keeper Sarah Leiby.  Gael goalie Jacquelyn Gates made six saves.  Nicole Paulucci led the Maroon & Gold with two shots on goal while Kerrie Deignan added one.

Iona concludes a two-game road trip at Maine on Sep. 4.  Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
