NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team continued non-conference play with a rainy afternoon match-up against Albany at Mazzella Field. The Gaels were bested 1-0, falling to 1-4-1 on the year while the Great Danes pulled even at 2-2.
The only goal of the day came in the 12th minute when Aubrey VanGorder put Albany ahead by one with her third tally of the season. Chrissy Klepper picked up an assist, crossing the ball from the left side before VanGorder chipped it in past Iona goalkeeper
Trista Rivera.
Carly Haden led the Gaels with three shots on goal while
Sofia Sanchez added one.
Kerrie Deignan,
Leah Taylor, and
Laura Jackson helped to round out the team's nine total shots.
Albany just edged Iona 11-9 in shots, and both teams attempted three corner kicks. Rivera made seven saves in net for Iona in the loss. For the Great Danes, Dani Britt earned the win with a pair of saves in the first half. She was relieved by Jacky Ubert who tended goal for the final 45 minutes, making two saves.
Iona finalizes its two game homestand on Sunday, Sep. 11. The Gaels host Seton Hall at 3:00 pm.
