Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Manhattan freshman Emmy Andujar's turn around 22-footer as time expired stunned the Iona College men's basketball team in a 75-72 defeat at the Hynes Center. The Jaspers (11-7, 4-2 MAAC) erased a 17-point halftime deficit to hand the Gaels (13-4, 5-1 MAAC) their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference defeat.
Within the letdown, however were milestone performances from two Iona seniors.
Mike Glover reached his 1,000th point with just under 13 minutes to go in fitting fashion, converting an alley-oop lob from classmate
Scott Machado. Glover became the 32nd 1,000-point scorer in Iona history and just he fourth to accomplish the feat in less than two seasons in Maroon & Gold. He joins all-time leading scorer Steve Burtt '84, No. 3 Gary Springer '84 and No. 4
Jeff Ruland as Gael performers to hit the millennium mark in their second year in New Rochelle. The assist from Machado was one of a career-high 16 for Iona's point guard. He was one assist shy of the school record of 17 set by Danny Doyle on Feb. 19, 1994. He extended his NCAA lead in assists per game, averaging 10.4 in 17 contests.
The Gaels began the game on a torrid shooting stretch, quickly taking a double-digit lead less than seven minutes into the contest. Sophomore
Sean Armand hit his fourth three-pointer during the stretch to put Iona ahead 19-7 at the 13:23 mark. The Maroon & Gold hit nine of its first 11 long distance attempts in the first half. The Gaels led by as many as 18 after senior
Randy Dezouvre converted a Machado pass into a layup with 2:03 remaining in the frame. Iona went into the locker room with a 39-22 advantage.
With a 62-45 deficit with just under eight minutes to play, Manhattan began to chip away at the Iona lead. A
Kyle Smyth trifecta, the Jaspers went on 10-0 run over a 2:43 span to cut the margin to seven points. It became a five-point game after an Andujar layup, but Dezouvre quickly converted a Machado assist less than 10 seconds later. After the Gaels forced a missed shot on the defensive end, a Smyth three-point attempt in transition rimmed out, in a shot that could have been a dagger for the visiting team. The Jaspers scored seven straight points to knot the score at 69-69 with 1:53 to play. At that point, both teams traded possessions. A Gael miss and a Jasper turnover put the ball in the home team's hand. Glover was fouled on a tip-in attempt and hit one of two free throws to put Iona ahead by a point with 32 seconds remaining. The Jaspers' Rhamel Brown converted a conventional three-point play on a put back and a foul to make the score 71-70 in favor of Manhattan with under 10 seconds remaining.
Looking to draw contact on his way to the basket, junior
Lamont Jones hit a sprawling jumper with three ticks left as the game looked as if it were headed to overtime. The Jaspers called timeout when they reached mid court and had 1.3 seconds to get the game winning attempt off. With Machado in his face, Andujar turned and fired from just outside the three-point arc and banked home the stunning attempt that shocked the capacity crowd at the Hynes Center.
Glover posted 18 points and eight boards, shooting 6-for-10 from the field. Armand and Smyth each had 12 points, connecting on four trifectas a piece. Machado had eight points and five rebounds to go along with his 16 assists.
Manhattan junior George Beamon posted 21 points to lead all scorers. He recorded seven boards and three assists. Brown had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds while the game's hero, Andujar, posted 17 points in the win.
The Maroon & Gold are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they host Loyola at 3:30 pm.
