FAIRFIELD, CT. – Nine new Iona College swimming records were set, but the Gaels faced a tough Fairfield University squad and fell 143-98 in the men's competition and 127-116 on the women's side in a MAAC meet at the RecPlex on Saturday.
Led by sophomore Justin Grigull with three individual victories, the Gaels also received great individual performances from seniors Jamie Manser and Chris Yacobacci with a pair of wins.
The Stags dominated the opening portion of the meet, until senior Mackenzie Mone won the women's 200-Free in 2:11.88, sophomore Brigitte Doughty finished in second.
Grigull took his first individual victory in the 200-Free in 1:59.09. He then won the 100-Free, coming in at 54.07. Grigull then set a new record in the 200-Backstoke, winning the event in 2:14.64.
Manser set a new school record in the 200-IM finishing at 2:28.19. Manser then took the 200-Breaststoke in 2:45.13.
In the men's 200-IM, Yacobacci set a new school record, taking the event in 2:12.87. He
then set his second record of the day in the 200-Breastroke at 2:24.73.
In the men's 200-Butterfly, sophomore Nick Kotonias won the event in 2:14.77.
Junior Theresa Harvey took a one-second victory in the women's 100-Free at 1:00.37.
The Gaels took the women's 400-Free, as freshmen Olivia Kroll, Ashley Bresnahan, along with Doughty and Mone won in 4:14.06. The men's version saw the Gaels take second in 3:41.91, but the team of senior Cameron Hudson, junior Joseph De Leone, and sophomores Lee Stiles and Ryan Bacci set a new school record.
Other records set by the Gaels came in the men's and women's400-Medley Relay finishing in second at 4:12.58 and 4:34.51, respectively. Yacobacci placed second in the men's 400-Free at 4:18.09 for his third record of the afternoon.
The Gaels will now have three weeks to prepare for the MAAC Championships that will take place in Buffalo, NY at the Erie Community College pool, February16-18.
