RIVERDALE, NY - Senior midfielder
Alvaro Torrecilla's goal in the 96th minute pushed the Iona College men's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over Manhattan College Friday evening at Gaelic Park.
Just over five minutes into the ten minute overtime period, junior midfielder
Franklin Castellanos started the play from midfield. Dribbling right up the middle of the field, Castellanos fed Torrecilla who beat the Jaspers defense in a foot race, putting the ball into the lower right corner for his second goal of the season.
The Jaspers struck first in the contest, scoring less than ten minutes into the contest. Just over nine minutes into the game, Eugene Heerschap took a pass from Tommy Amos inside the box and put a shot into the lower left corner to give Manhattan a 1-0 lead.
In the 39th minute, the Gaels would tie the game. Junior
MJ Nestor, who just checking into the game, made an immediate impact. Nestor would launch a throw in from the right side and found senior
Douglas Stephens who put a shot in from five yards out for his second tally of the year.
The teams would remain knotted for the rest of the contest until Torrecilla's game winner.
Iona would control the offense throughout the contest, outshooting the Jaspers 26-12, including a 13-3 margin in the first half. Sophomore goalkeeper
Borja Barbero made two saves for the Gaels while Manhattan's George Ellis posted 11 saves.
Iona continues MAAC play Sunday against Saint Peter's at 1:00 pm.
