NIAGARA UNIV, NY - A Niagara goal in the 65th minute proved to be the difference as the Iona College men's soccer team fell to the Purple Eagles 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Niagara Field.
After trading opportunities throughout the first half and into the second, Niagara got the lone goal of the game in the 66th minute. Darren Cooper took a shot on goal from the right corner, with the ball skipping past Iona goalkeeper
Borja Barbero.
Playing from behind, the Gaels tried their best to even the score, attempting three shots in the final 24 minutes but were unable to tie the contest.
Overall, Niagara outshot the Gaels 10-8, with Iona holding a 6-4 advantage on shots on goal. Junior defender
Tommy Martin led the Gaels with two shots. Barbero made three saves for Iona while Niagara's Brett Petricek made six saves in the game.
Iona returns home next weekend for the final week of the regular season, beginning against Siena Friday at 2:00 pm.
