POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Amanda Epstein and Melanie Rigo scored to advance Marist to the MAAC Championship as they defeated the Iona College women's soccer team 2-0 on Friday evening in second semifinals matchup of the evening.
In the tournament's first game, #3 Loyola defeated #2 Fairfield 1-0 to set up a rematch of last season's MAAC finals.
The Gaels were outshot in the game 13-10 with junior GK Trista Rivera making four saves. Marist netminder Andrea Wicks also made four stops for the win. The Gaels owned the corners, taking a 5-0 edge in corner kick set pieces, including a pair that almost led to the tying goal in the second half.
Iona's shots on goal were credited to senior D Leah Taylor, junior MF Christina Tesoriero and sophomore F Melissa Frederick and F Samantha Fiorenzo.
Epstein scored 18 minutes into regulation off an assist from Samantha Panzner with a one-time cross. The insurance marker came in the 85th minute off a throw in by Rycke Guiney and then a cross from Jackie Frey to the goal scorer Rigo.
